Actor's Corner: Stories from the Road

Elizabeth Kelly
Hi, I'm originally from Chicago, where I was born and raised and lived until I started the tour and moved to Louisville. So far, the tour has been amazing. We've traveled a bit, stayed in Jefferson County a bit, and been in the office a bit. My story from the road took place at Hazard High School. We were having a particularly rough show; too many kids, too far away, and really rowdy. Nathan and I were pretty sure the students were going to leave the show with the same concept of Shakespeare with which they had come. As we were packing up to get some lunch, a girl of about 16 approached me and said, "I just wanted to tell you that I'm kind of going through what that last scene was about, and you moved me to tears." That was one of those moments that makes the tour so worthwhile. See you in the Spring!

My story from the road actually took place here in Jefferson County. Liz and I had finished the second of our three shows when a young man peered around the corner of our set. "Yes?", I asked. He then went on to tell me he needed a bit of advice. He liked a girl who was seeing someone else; kind of like one of our scenes. "I mean, in the scene you won her with what you were saying," he concluded. Not having a degree in adolescent relationship counseling, I did the best I could. " Don't try to break them up." I then added, "Shakespeare wrote the best love poetry ever, though." As I thought about this experience later, wondering if I had said the right things, it occurred to me, here was a kid who had not said a word during the show, but had watched Shakespeare and applied it to his own life - exactly why we are "on the road". LOVE THAT!
