![]() Summer 1997 Fan of the Festival By Deborah Lotze I came to Central Park to see the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival's Henry V and Two Gentlemen of Verona last summer and little did I know that it would open up a new chapter in my life. On a particular evening, I arrived earlier than normal to meet a friend. There was so much activity going on in the course of preparing for these performances that I became fascinated with the work involved. I found that I could not stay away and began to go to the shows every night. There was a feeling of being part of something very exciting and magical. After a while, Jennifer and John (two of the summer actors) started to notice that I was coming out every night, and started speaking to me. The other actors and interns began to follow suit. Needless to say I thought this was really cool. I was smitten!
I went almost every night to watch both the plays and became better and better friends with everyone and more determined that I wanted to be a part of this. On the day of the last play, after it was over, I stopped to talk to John and as we spoke, in the background, the stage was coming down for the last time for the summer of 1996. I commented to him that the magic was leaving and I didn't want it to go. There had to be a way to hang on to that feeling! I had looked in the program and seen that the Festival needed volunteers and I decided to join up. I am so very glad I did! There are so many things to be done, so much help needed in order to hold onto the magic. There are adventures such as working the Garvin Gate Blues Festival, going to the warehouse to sort out costumes and then working the Costume & Bake Sale, the St. James Art Show, and community service projects like the Halloween Party at the Louisville Zoo and the Public Radio Fund Drive. There are more mundane tasks such as stuffing or addressing envelopes or cleaning up around the office, but it all needs to be done in order to keep the Festival going. The Festival gives us all the magic of their performances by wonderful troops of actors each summer for free and I for one felt like I wanted to do what I could to give something back to them for the happiness that they've given me. Thank you to the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival and all the special friends I've made here. I'm really looking forward to the magic of the 1997 season.
