Artistic Production Staff


Kristine A. Schipper (Equity Stage Manager) joins the Festival for her first season after finishing the Humana Festival at the Actors Theatre of Louisville where she was the Assistant Stage Manager for Dinner with Friends. She was the Assistant Stage Manager for Dorin, and A Visit From the Footbinder, new works produced at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. She also was a Production Assistant for two years at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas working on Antony and Cleopatra with Vanessa Redgrave, Hamlet: A Monologue with Robert Wilson, Angels in America: Part I and Part 2, Food Chain, and the Greeks Part I and Part 2 directed by Gregory Boyd.

Paul S. Hengesteg (Stage Manager Intern) is excited to be joining the Festival for his first season. In the fall, Paul will enter his senior year at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where is a Theatre Arts and German double major. At Theatre Simpson, he has served as Stage Manager for Top Girls and Inspecting Carol, Assistant Stage Manager for Dancing at Lughnasa, Lighting designer for Still Life and an actor in Twelfth Night, Arcadia, and Macbeth. Professional credits for Paul include working at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City where he worked on Little Shop of Horrors, Guys & Dolls, Phantom for the opera, and Evita.

John A. Hofland (Scenographer) returns for his second season as scenic and puppet designer for the Festival. Professional design credits include several productions for CLIMB Theatre in St. Paul, productions at the Sioux Falls Playhouse in South Dakota, and three productions currently playing at the Kharkov, Ukraine, Puppet Theatre. This past season, he designed puppets for Jeff Wirth’s production of An Interactive Christmas Carol. Mr. Hofland is an Associate professor and Chair of the Dordt College Theatre Arts Department in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Ted Thomas (Technical Director) joins the Festival for his second season. Mr. Thomas graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1991, and has worked consistently in his field since earning his degree. Most of that time was spent with Playhouse on the Square in Memphis where he was a master carpenter for over 85 productions. He has worked as a lighting designer for Penobscott Rep in Bangor, Maine, and also for the Covered Bridge Company in north East, Maryland. In the summer of 1995, he was the technical director/designer for Summer Stage, a youth arts program in Arkansas. In his "spare" time, he enjoys a computer drafting, toy making and sailing. Although Mr. Thomas was raised on the Chesapeake Bay, his ancestors were among the original settlers of Bourbon County and his family still breeds horses and farms there. In the last year, Ted and his new wife Christine celebrated the birth of their new daughter Tempest.

James Addink ( Scenic Technician Intern) joins the Festival for his first season. He hails from Manhattan, Montana and is currently working on a B. A. in Theatre and a B.A. in Broadcast Communication at Dordt College. He has previously designed a set for Coleman Jenning’s The Honorable Urashima Taro, a children’s theatre production at Dordt College.

Michelle Bombe (Costume Designer) is delighted to be joining the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival for her first summer season. Michelle designed costumes for the 1997-98 Shakespeare Alive! tour. Michelle has spent the past fourteen seasons with Hope Summer Repertory Theatre in Holland, Michigan. During the academic year, she is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Resident Costume Designer for Hope College. Michelle received her MFA in Design from The University of Texas at Austin. Her other credits include the Austin Shakespeare Festival, Austin Lyric Opera, Ballet Austin and Live Oak Theatre

Esther Warrendorf (First Hand) is happy to be joining the Festival for the first time this season after spending previous summers with Utah Shakespearean Festival, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Ms. Warrendorf earned her BFA from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She now lives in Lexington, Kentucky, where she has worked with the Lexington Children’s Theatre.

Toni L. Wright (Cutter/Draper) is very excited to have the opportunity to work with the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. Since completing her M.F.A degree at Detroit’s Wayne State University a year ago, Toni has worked as a Freelance designer in the areas of Costume, Fashion and Interior Design. When not in the costume shop, Toni divides her time between seeing movies, reading and sending out resume packages. She would like to thank JW (whom she misses) for helping her become a stronger person, as well as her family.

Laura Defibaugh (Stitcher) is currently a student at Ohio University studying for my B.F.A. in Production, Design and Technology. This is her fourth year at college, the first two were spent at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio studying Literature and Theatre. Her third year of college was in Ormskirk, England where she studied Arts and Theatre at Edge Hill College of Higher Education. Since starting college, she has been actively participating in theatre, especially stitching costumes. After she graduates she plans to go to graduate school for costume and set design.

Robert Yoshioka (Props and Crafts Intern) joins the Festival for his first season. Orignally from Maui, he currently makes his home in St. Louis, Missouri where he is completing a B.F.A. in Technical Direction/Props at The Conservatory of Theater Arts at Webster University. Besides working on numerous conservatory shows he has also worked for the Opera Theater of St. Louis, The Repertory Theater of St. Louis and The Black Hills Playhouse.

Angela Huddleston (Wardrobe Intern), a native of Wilmore, KY, is currently pursuing a dance performance and English double major at Hope College.

Damon Whitten (Master Electrician) is overjoyed to join the Festival for the first time. After freelancing for the past eight months, Damon would like to thank Curt for a weekly paycheck. Thank you Curt and Penelope.

G. Michele Gallenstein (Electrics Intern) is pleased to be joining the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival for the first time. Previously, she has had the opportunity to work with such designers as Ed McCarthy and Amy Appleyard at Actors Theatre of Louisville, as well as, other theatres in the area including Stage One, Kentucky Center for the Arts, and Derby Dinner Playhouse. Ms. Gallenstein will be returning to school in the fall at Western Kentucky University where she will pursue a B.F.A. in theatre.

Aaron Hanks (Musician) is a 1996 graduate of Floyd Central High School in Indiana. He is currently pursuing two undergraduate degrees, in Music Performance and Education, at the University of Louisville. In his ninth year of studying percussion, past instructors include Chad Stoltenburg, James Rago, Michael Terrarrccio, and David Milburn. Theater experience includes the Southern Indiana Civic Theatre Association’s 1994 performance of Into the Woods.

Paul Doyle (Sound Technician) is a graduate of the University of Alabama. Past designs include Blithe Spirit, The Nerd, Wait Until Dark and The Taffetas for Heritage Repertory Theatre, and Godspell and The Tempest Tossed for the University of Alabama. He will pursue a graduate degree in Sound Design from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the fall.
