Kentucky Shakespeare Festival’s artist–in–residency program assists teachers by incorporating performance–based teaching techniques into the daily classroom activities. Residencies are available for kindergarten through twelfth grade.

All residencies address the Content Standards of the National Standards for Arts Education as well as KERA Academic expectations.

Six week to year–round residencies can be developed for schools to meet their individual students’ and teachers' needs. Cost for each varies.

Comment on the Artist in Residency Program

“The Festival’s committment to schools is unsurpassed by any community organization that I have worked with in twenty–eight years. They always are willing to accomodate our schedule and plan their program with students’ needs being the priority.”

Sample Artist in ResidencyCurriculum (Two Week Residency)

    Week 1

    Day One: Introduction to performance

    (warm-ups, tongue twisters, movement)

Day Two: Exploring Shakespeare’s language (insults, salutations)

Day Three: Choral readings – an introduction

Day Four: More choral readings – moving with the text

    Day Five: Introducing the scene
    (casting and read-thru of scene)

    Week 2

Day One: What's in a scene?

Day Two: Blocking – finding movement in the text

Day Three: Rehearsal of scene – building to the climax

Day Four: Rehearsal of scene – using everything we have learned

    Day Five: Final performance

Longer Residencies could involve a more in–depth exploration of one or two scenes, or could develop into rehearsal of a full piece. Younger classes would focus more on creative dramatics than text.
